The Night Shift

Between 2 and 5 am, mothers awake with their children each write one line. At dawn, the lines become a poem. Ninety nights, from the longest night of the year to the equinox.

One line a night. We trust you.
This is an art project, not a support line. If you're struggling tonight, call or text 988.

The Score

  1. Between 2 and 5 am, a mother awake with her child submits one line.
  2. One line per person per night.
  3. Each line is stamped with the time it was written.
  4. Each contributor may record the hour she woke.
  5. Lines are arranged in order of time. They are never altered: spelling, typos and punctuation stay as written.
  6. Lines may be left out, but never changed.
  7. Each night's shift is published at dawn, every day, for 90 days, from the longest night of the year to the equinox.
  8. Hours are counted. At the end of the shift, the total is published.
  9. No one is paid.

Terms

Anonymous. Contributions are anonymous. Please leave out names, places and anything that could identify you or your child.

Never altered. Lines are arranged in time order, or left out, but never changed. Lines with identifying details or signs of real distress are not published.

Your words stay yours. You keep ownership of your line. By submitting it you give Grace Gulley a non-exclusive right to publish it as part of The Night Shift: online, in newsletters, in print (including books) and in exhibitions.

One line a night. It's an honor system.

Not a support line. The Night Shift is an art project. Lines are read hours later, not in real time. If you're struggling, call or text 988 (US), or your local emergency number.

Privacy

We don't collect names, emails, or phone numbers. There are no accounts and nothing to sign up for.

What is stored: your line, the local time you wrote it, the time zone it was written in, the time you woke (if you give it), the hours between them, and the night number.

Where: in a private Google Sheet that only the artist can open. The form doesn't record IP addresses. Google, which hosts the sheet, may keep its own standard server logs.

How long: lines are kept for [retention period] after the project ends on March 21, 2027, to make the printed work, then deleted. Published lines remain part of the published poems.

This website: gracegulley.com is hosted by Squarespace, which keeps basic visitor statistics (like page views) and may set cookies. None of that is connected to your line, which is sent separately to the sheet.

Music: the playlist is a Spotify player. It loads only if you open it, and then Spotify's own privacy policy applies.
